What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency? (And What Can Wait Until Morning)

It\’s 11pm and water is dripping from your ceiling. Is this a \”call the emergency plumber now\” situation, or can it wait until morning? Knowing the difference matters — both for your home\’s safety and for your wallet. Emergency call-outs cost more than standard appointments, and calling one unnecessarily is money wasted. But not calling one when you should can cost you tens of thousands of rands in structural damage.

After responding to thousands of plumbing calls across Sandton over the years, our team has a clear picture of what truly can\’t wait and what can safely be managed until the next business day. Here\’s our honest guide.

Call Us Immediately — These Are Genuine Emergencies

These situations require an emergency plumber right now, regardless of the time:

Burst or Actively Leaking Pressurised Pipe

A pressurised pipe that has burst or is spraying water is an immediate emergency. Even a small continuous spray can release hundreds of litres before morning. If you can isolate it at the main stop valve, do so immediately — but you still need a licensed plumber to make the permanent repair before you restore water supply to the property.

Sewage Backing Up Into Your Home

Raw sewage coming up through floor drains, shower trays or toilets is a Category 3 water contamination event (the most serious type). It\’s a health hazard, and in South Africa it must be reported and remediated immediately. Do not use any plumbing in the property until this is resolved.

Geyser Burst or Actively Flooding

A burst geyser can release its entire 150–200 litre tank in minutes, and will continue pulling water from the mains if not isolated. Switch off the main supply and the geyser circuit breaker, and call us immediately. Ceiling damage, structural soaking and electrical hazards can all result from delayed action.

No Water Supply to the Entire Property

If you have no water at all and the municipality has not announced a shutdown in your area, a main line failure or blockage is the likely cause. This becomes an emergency in households with young children, elderly residents, or medical needs that require water access.

Gas Leak Combined With Plumbing System

If you smell gas near your geyser, boiler or any appliance connected to the water heating system, leave the property immediately and call both the gas emergency line and a licensed plumber. Do not use any electrical switches.

When in Doubt — Call

If you\’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us anyway. Our team can assess the situation over the phone in most cases and advise whether you need us immediately or can book a morning appointment.

Urgent but Can Wait Until Morning — Book First Thing

These situations are serious and need professional attention today, but if you discover them late at night, a morning appointment is usually acceptable provided you take the interim actions listed:

Slow Leak From a Fitting or Pipe Joint

A slow drip from a visible fitting — not a pressurised spray — can often be managed overnight by placing a bucket under it and monitoring the rate. If the drip significantly increases, escalate to an emergency call.

No Hot Water (Geyser Not Leaking)

Waking up to cold water is frustrating but not an emergency unless the geyser is also leaking. A failed element, thermostat or tripped circuit breaker can wait until morning. However, if your geyser is making unusual noises or you can see water around its base, treat it as an emergency.

Completely Blocked Toilet (One Toilet Property)

If you have only one toilet in the property and it\’s completely blocked, this edges toward an emergency — particularly for families with children or elderly residents. For properties with multiple bathrooms, a single blocked toilet can typically wait until morning.

Blocked Kitchen Sink or Shower Drain

Inconvenient, but rarely a true emergency. Try the steps in our drain unblocking guide first. If that doesn\’t resolve it, book a morning appointment.

Not an Emergency — Book a Standard Appointment

These common issues are often mistaken for emergencies but can be scheduled at your convenience:

  • Dripping taps or running toilets (wasteful but not urgent)
  • Low water pressure (unless sudden and complete)
  • Leaking shower head or mixer
  • Stiff or hard-to-turn tap handles
  • Toilet that runs continuously after flushing
  • Geyser replacement (non-leaking, functioning but ageing)
  • Bathroom renovation or fitting installation

How to Minimise Damage While Waiting

If you\’ve determined you can wait until morning, these steps will limit damage overnight:

  1. Turn off the main water supply to reduce pressure on any leaking component
  2. Place buckets, towels and plastic sheeting under any drip
  3. Photograph everything for your insurance claim
  4. Switch off the geyser circuit breaker if there\’s any moisture near the unit
  5. Call your insurance provider to log the incident before any repair work begins
